Historical Impact
Angelfire and Tripod offered free hosting with intrusive ads but zero technical barriers (1996–2002). Their pages became a parallel folk tradition to GeoCities — marquee scrolling text, WebRing navigation, MIDI embeds, and under construction banners in equally chaotic, equally sincere amateur design.
